SEMAX

SEMAX is the synthetic heptapeptide Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro, supplied as a defined reference material for controlled peptide-fragment, cellular-assay and analytical studies.

The N-terminal methionine residue matters analytically, since methionine is prone to oxidation to the corresponding sulfoxide; such a by-product shows up in mass spectrometry as a mass 16 Da higher and, on reversed-phase HPLC, as an earlier-eluting companion peak, which purity testing watches for. Target identity is confirmed against the theoretical molecular weight of 813.9 g/mol (C37H51N9O10S).
